10 Ways to Green Up the Grass on Your Own Side of the Fence
June 9, 2009 No CommentsSo why is that other grass so green? Are you dissatisfied with who you are? Do you think if you only had that job at XYZ Company, your financial future would be secure? Or if you did not have so many Twinkies clinging to your thighs, that hunk would finally notice you?
It seems there is always some thing we feel is sabotaging us from living the life of our dreams.
Here are 10 ways that may just give your grass that lush green look.
Appreciate others. Letting those around you know that they are valued and appreciated not only makes them feel better, but it also makes your relationship stronger. Having high-quality relationships is a key ingredient to happiness.
Appreciate yourself. List some things you like about yourself, i.e. personality characteristics or a physical feature you are thankful for (pretty eyes or a nice smile). What compliments do people give you? Post this list in a place where you will see it often. Read it every day upon awakening and before going to bed for a week and see how it makes you feel.
Live passionately! What are your passions? Do you enjoy sky diving? Perhaps you love making cards. Start with one of your passions and implement it into your schedule at least once per week. Scheduling the time is important because it is easy to say we will do it when we find time, but that search may never end.
Give back. It can be very fulfilling to volunteer for an organization or give back to the community. Some like being active in their churches or youth groups; others may enjoy reading to the elderly. You can find all kinds of ideas by searching the Internet for volunteer organizations in your area.
Be active! It’s no secret that being physically active greatly benefits our overall wellbeing, but consistency is the key. Everyone has a different exercise personality, so try different forms of exercise to find something you can enjoy while getting the benefit of better health. Make it fun, not something you will get bored with and quit after three days. You should consult your doctor before beginning an exercise program.
Eat healthfully. There are dozens of eating plans available. If you are not sure which one works best, you can simply rely on commonsense. For example, an apple is healthier than a candy bar; whole grains are healthier than refined sugars; fresh vegetables are preferable to potato flakes. Wise choices about what you eat and drink will make that image in the mirror look better and better!
Resolve emotional issues professionally. Is there something in your life that you are struggling with? Perhaps you were recently divorced or experienced childhood trauma. Put aside your hesitation and enroll yourself in a good counseling program. Many employers offer a counseling service, so check to see what is available. Do what’s necessary to experience peace in your soul.
Set goals. I recommend “Reverse Timeline Scheduling.” Write your goal and the date by which you would like to achieve it. Write the steps you will take to achieve that goal and schedule them in reverse order from the date your goal is completed until the present, today.
Grow yourself. No, I don’t mean physically; I am speaking from an intellectual or educational standpoint. Study up on a topic, read a book at least once per month about something you’re interested in or take a class. The best form of wrinkles are the ones on your brain! Keep learning!
Be positive. If you keep positive people and things around you, it will start to rub off on you. If listening to the news makes you feel negative or grouchy, turn it off. Turn on some uplifting music you enjoy and dance around the house. You may just want to close the blinds first.
“Green up your grass” by taking yourself on and making the life you already have one that you love!
